Back in April, Marie Yat held a showcase for her third collection. Unfortunately I was unable to attend due to work commitments, however, this did work in my favour. Marie and her team were kind enough to let me to visit their studio when I was next in London and I not only got to view the collection but was lucky enough try on and photograph some of the samples too.
Collection III is inspired by Japanese Ama divers; a 2,000 year old tradition of predominantly female divers submerging themselves up to 30 feet under water in nothing but a loincloth to harvest pearls, abalone and shellfish. The tradition still takes place today and even with technological advancements, divers still choose to forgo breathing apparatus. The theme of diving is especially fitting for this collection, as it’s Yat’s first to feature swimwear. The classic G-tang bra and accompanying brief have had a swimwear make over, alongside Ryym and Sade. There is also a new one-piece bathing suit featuring the signature cut away details that Yat has become known for. In addition to the swimwear, there are several new lingerie styles featuring details inspired by the Ama divers. Braided drop binding that looks like rope, draw string details and a thong reminiscent of a traditional Japanese Fundoshi bring this collection together. Bright orange and denim blue are new accent colours for this season, inspired by old images of the divers and remind me of being abroad in the hot summer weather. If you want to read more about the inspiration behind the collection and view the lookbook, you can read Yat’s interview with Dazed and Confused here.

I’m very impressed with the new collection and I hope you all are as excited as I am to get my hands on some.
The swimwear is due to come out in July and the lingerie in September but you can keep an eye on the Marieyat Instagram and Facebook for exact dates.
